About Doug Newman
Former environmental policy analyst and program manager for the US Environmental Protection Agency, and deputy director of intergovernmental affairs for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Currently, an independent project planning and grant development consultant for nonprofit organizations advancing independent living for persons with disabilities. Doug is the founder and director of the Smart Self-Reliance Initiative, a partnership between Illinois nonprofit organizations and regional Centers for Independent Living enabling persons with disabilities to live more independently through smart technologies and services. He also serves as Executive Director of the Seniors Independent Living Collaborative, a nonprofit R&D organization accelerating the adoption of smart home automation technologies among older adults. Previously, Doug served as an independent technology transfer/planning consultant with expertise in innovative program development to improve the environmental quality and efficiency of the built environment. He has developed and delivered related training programs and projects for agencies, utilities, and municipalities in Australia, China, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, and the United States. He has authored numerous publications on resource-efficient community development and local energy assurance planning in the U.S. and abroad. Former independent-sector positions include: Managing Partner for SCD Consultants; Director for the National Energy Center for Sustainable Communities at San Diego State University; Manager of Energy and Environmental Programs at the Gas Technology Institute and co-founder and first Program Director for the Congressionally-chartered National Environmental Education Foundation.
