ABOUT DONNA PEBERDY

Dr Donna Peberdy (she/her) is Associate Professor of Performance, Sex and Gender at Southampton Solent University and University Research Lead for Media, Culture and the Arts.Her research explores cultural representations of gender and sex, with a particular focus on contemporary film and television. Donna’s recent British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship (2024) supported her project Screening Sexual Violence, which examines short films by female filmmakers as tools for education, activism and social change. The project continues to generate impact through the Screening Sexual Violence resource by improving conversations around gender-based violence and empowering audiences to engage with challenging subjects in transformative ways. https://screeningsexualviolence.com/film-library/She is the author of Masculinity and Film Performance: Male Angst in Contemporary American Cinema (Palgrave Macmillan 2011) and Tainted Love: Screening Sexual Perversion (I.B. Tauris 2017). She is co-director of Screening Sex, co-series editor of the Screening Sex book series with Edinburgh University Press and is currently editing a two-volume collection on The Sex Scene (2026).Donna’s research leadership spans REF (UoAs 32, 33, 34), postgraduate research and institutional research culture and community. She plays a key role in shaping institutional research strategy, championing researcher development and wellbeing, and fostering interdisciplinary and creative practice research. She is committed to cultivating environments that support innovation and equity, meaningful collaboration across disciplines, and cultural impact.Awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2020 for her collaborative, research-informed approach to teaching, learning and assessment, Donna brings a values-led, strategic approach to academic leadership and welcomes opportunities to contribute to institutional research strategy, interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of positive, sustainable research cultures and environments.
