About Donald Erbschloe

I apply 20+ years of experience focused on academia, operations, and science & technology on very challenging problems, taking concepts from the laboratory to the hands of those who need solutions—for example, what is the best way to structure a laboratory to meet 21st century demands? What are the most practical energy efficient technologies and practices for a given enterprise-for example, can we exploit natural methods of energy harvesting for large aircraft operations? How do we take a biological agent decontamination process out the laboratory and turn it into a deployable system? Can air operations coexist with encroaching renewable energy efforts? How do we incorporate emerging information technological advances to assist aircrews, improve safety, perform missions in challenging \"extreme environments\", and increase mission reliability? My career is balanced among three primary thrusts: aviation, academia, and science. I am a command pilot in the Air Force with flying hours. In 2006 I became the first Chief Scientist at the Air Mobility Command (AMC)-responsible for Air Force rapid global mobility—a $15B/year enterprise with personnel stationed worldwide. In prior positions, I served three tours on the faculty at the Air Force Academy in the Department of Physics and as the Director of Research on the Dean of the Faculty staff and rose to command pilot rank in air mobility operations. I was the Commander and Deputy Director of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Air Force\'s basic research manager ($400M/year budget). Following this assignment, I moved to the Office of Science at the Department of Energy as the Deputy and Chief Operations Officer, a person organization with an annual budget of over $4B, managing 10 world-class laboratories.
