As a violinist with Mariachi de Uclatlán, I contribute to the preservation and performance of traditional Mexican music within an academic setting. Founded in 1961 and formally integrated into UCLA’s curriculum in 1964, Mariachi de Uclatlán is the first university-based mariachi ensemble of its kind. Under the musical direction of Grammy Award-winning maestro Jesús “Chuy” Guzmán, the ensemble engages with a diverse repertoire representative of regional Mexican styles including son jalisciense, son huasteco, bolero, ranchera, and huapango.My participation in this ensemble bridges cultural heritage and scholarly performance practice, offering a unique space to explore music as a form of identity, resistance, and intergenerational storytelling within the broader framework of Chicanx/Latinx and ethnomusicological studies.
