As Director of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program at Oklahoma City University, I stepped into a role that required vision, resolve, and a willingness to disrupt the status quo. The program I inherited was small, under-resourced, and designed around a traditional brick-and-mortar model that no longer met the needs of today’s students or the realities of modern clinical practice.I led a full-scale transformation, redesigning the program as a fully online, asynchronous, and intentionally rigorous experience grounded in evidence-based training, ethical excellence, and student-centered design. Under my leadership, enrollment has grown over 400%, from 9 to nearly 60 students annually. We raised-not lowered-our standards. I curated a diverse, high-quality student body through a competitive, holistic admissions process that prioritizes professional disposition, ethical readiness, and clinical potential.I integrated AI-assisted simulation labs, expanded field placement partnerships, and build community relationships. Our students are prepared for real-world work in community mental health, primary care, trauma recovery, corrections, and beyond.I currently oversee all aspects of program development, accreditation alignment, curriculum design, faculty hiring, and student success. My leadership reflects a deep commitment to innovation in counselor education and to shaping a future-ready, socially responsive mental health workforce.In addition to my academic leadership, I maintain a small, deeply intentional private practice as a Neurocounselor. This work keeps me grounded in the lived experience of clinical care and informs how I train and mentor emerging counselors. With one foot in evidence-based practice and the other in pedagogy, I bridge the gap between theory and lived experience, preparing students not just for licensure, but for the human work of being WITH their clients in the special way that good counselors do.
