About Dale Newfield

I have over two decades of experience developing software and distributed systems, and a passion for accelerating teams and growing team members. I focus on producing resilient, comprehensible, maintainable, solid systems. My educational background, which began at Carnegie Mellon and includes a Master\'s degree in Computer Science, was solidified by industry experience scaling distributed systems at Amazon.com and Turner Entertainment. This foundation equipped me with the tools to analyze data structures and algorithms, and to identify race conditions early, which informs the design of efficient, fault-tolerant algorithms and architectures. Working alone and with teams of varying sizes, I have built and supported proofs of concept, production-hardened monoliths, and large-scale, distributed systems. I consider myself to be a tool builder, and have experience leveraging, evolving, and replacing legacy systems to build dependable tools that enable people in various industries to efficiently do their jobs. While my experience encompasses the full stack, my passion lies in building high-quality back-end platforms, assembling data flows, REST microservices (server based and serverless), and data stores (relational and document-based) into event-driven designs. Full disclosure: my expertise is heavily skewed toward the Java ecosystem and AWS\'s cloud. Throughout my career I focused on the technology and led from behind. At my last role, my first as a Principal Software Engineer, I had more impact leading from the front, but still by example. I promoted routine collaboration, adoption of industry best practices, the velocity dividends returned through early investments in resilient, reusable component design, and the reliability and confidence gains achieved with detailed integration test suites executed within CI/CD pipelines.I am looking for an opportunity to leverage my technical expertise, dedication to quality execution, and passion for teaching to contribute to the success of projects and teams and the growth of team members.
