About Divya Khatter

Although I\'ve been looking at the BPO industry for just about a year through my association was hr and marketing, I\'ve come to deeply respect the industry and the people working in it. My exposure is limited to companies doing customer support & inbound sales and so what I talk about here is with reference to these domains. Here are some of my observations: 1) BPOs provide a great platform to transform a fresh graduate into a seasoned communicator/sales person just within 2-3 years. 2) The BPO industry offers a great career to people who want to stay in it as well as a great stepping stone for people who aspire a sales career. In-fact communications, people relationships and customer psyche are the core of any business and in my opinion, people in the BPO industry get a great opportunity to study this up-close. 3)Yes, for international BPO jobs, night shifts are a little painful in the beginning but if planned well, one can achieve the same work life balance as any other industry. 4)Today, BPOs are mature and have developed systems, strong best practices and a set of unique skills. They are no longer the amateurs with just English speaking skills. 5)Most people I have met at BPO companies are very hard working, forward thinkers and great to work with. Would love to work more with the likes of them. BPOs deal with tons of interesting customer data – data that, if mined well will not only help companies improve their core products & services but also further consumer driven opportunity discovery & innovation. 6)Despite coming such a long way, I still see many who don’t think highly of BPO jobs. To them, I would say ‎- go spend some time with BPO employees on the field, experience their systems, conversations with customers, their expertise in dealing with all kinds of people - angry, sad, impatient and back-end processes. And if that doesn\'t humble you, lets sit and talk! BPOs offer a decent salary, a comfortable working environment & some great learning opportunities – what else would one really want especially when starting out their career? While there is a lot of great technical talent in India, understanding the customer psyche and domains from a user pain-point perspective is what Indian startups need to focus a little more on. And the BPO industry provides a great opportunity to do so. It is up to us on how to leverage all this data and expertise.
