ABOUT DIMITRIOS DIMITRAKOS

Dr. Dimitrios Dimitrakos is a California lawyer specializing in public international law. He earned his Master of Laws (LL.M) with merit in public international law, and a Doctorate (JSD) in international water resources law. Under the supervision of Prof. Stephen McCaffrey, in his doctoral dissertation he examined the international legal framework for the regulation of land-based sources of marine pollution globally and regionally, with emphasis, respectively, on UNCLOS and the Regional Seas Programme. As an attorney, Dimitrios offers specialist and bespoke legal research, advice and representation services to sovereign states and non-state actors and stakeholders in law of the sea, international water law, treaty law, and related areas. His current academic and professional focus rests in maritime boundary delimitation, marine pollution from land-based, vessels, and other sources, the interaction between international watercourses and regional seas regimes, and the normativity and scope of marine environmental protection principles (e.g. the precautionary principle and the ecosystem approach) in maritime areas within and beyond national jurisdiction. Additionally, he researches, represents, and advises on questions relevant to archipelagic states, prompt release of ships, marine environmental challenges facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS), fisheries, and climate change. As an IUCN WCEL member, Dimitrios participated in IUCN\'s Advisory Group and contributed to the preparation of IUCN\'s written submission to the ICJ in re: Obligations of States In Respect of Climate Change (Request for Advisory Opinion). Having led a successful law practice for over twenty years, Dimitrios continues to serves his clients also by bringing a wealth of matured expertise in such other areas as private international law, maritime law, European and Greek law, as well as certain fields of California and US law. He has also interned, clerked, and/or worked for government departments in Greece and California. Dimitrios has designed and taught international law, human rights, and post-grad international/foreign legal research courses, and presents and publishes, including on law of the sea developments. He has multijurisdictional experience and expertise in cross-border transactions and disputes in the U.S. and Europe. He speaks English, Greek, French, and has basic knowledge of German.
