In 2017, Dr. Azar joined Alphabet Verily Life Sciences as Senior Director of Ophthalmic Innovations (including diagnostic, therapeutic, drug delivery and surgical innovations). He became President and CEO of Twenty/Twenty Therapeutics, which was formed as a joint venture between Verily and Santen. He is a former Harvard Professor and currently Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology, and he served as Dean of the University of Illinois College of Medicine from 2011 to 2018.
