ABOUT DIDIER SCHWAB

Didier Schwab is a Full Professor of Computer Science at Université Grenoble Alpes and holds the Chair of Excellence in “Research, Innovation, and Education on Humans Augmented by Artificial Intelligence” (AugmentIA). For over twenty years, he has been passionate about natural language and speech processing. He has notably contributed to the development and study of large-scale language models, which have become essential in various domains—such as automated content creation, written and spoken translation, plagiarism detection, and communication support for individuals who are unable to speak. His work lies at the intersection of research, technological innovation, and education, with the aim of designing AI systems that are both high-performing and ethical. As part of the AugmentIA Chair, he addresses not only the technical challenges involved in developing natural language understanding algorithms, but also the societal issues related to accessibility, privacy protection, and fairness in the use of these technologies. Didier Schwab currently leads the ANR “Pantagruel” project, which focuses on creating and evaluating large-scale French language models, both monomodal (dealing with written text) and multimodal (integrating text, speech, and pictograms). This comprehensive approach meets a wide range of needs: improving machine translation quality, designing medical tools for diagnostic support or language rehabilitation, facilitating communication for people with disabilities, and offering new ways to foster expression for all users of the French language. Thanks to his expertise and dedication, Didier Schwab is helping shape the future of linguistic artificial intelligence by ensuring a balance between technological performance, social utility, and respect for human values. His work illustrates how research on large language models can be pursued within a framework of responsible innovation, serving both society and scientific advancement. Specialties: Artificial Intelligence, Cognition, Speech and natural Language Processing (NLP); design and evaluation of Large Language Models texts, speech, pictograms; Automated Writing and Content Generation; Machine Translation (written and oral); Plagiarism Detection and Authenticity Verification; Assisted Communication for Individuals with Disabilities; Medical Applications (diagnostic assistance, biomedical LLM);
