About Diane Rittenhouse

I am a Senior Fellow at Mathematica and Professor of Family Medicine and Health Policy at UCSF with more than two decades of experience studying health care organization, delivery, financing, and workforce — and translating that research into actionable policy. My scholarship focuses on strengthening primary care through policy reform, delivery system redesign, and workforce strategy, with particular attention to health equity and sustainability. I have led and contributed to national studies of physician practices, primary care transformation, and graduate medical education, and have advised federal and state leaders on strategies to build a more accessible and accountable primary care system. I serve as an expert advisor to the Health of U.S. Primary Care Scorecard, recommended by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and have been invited to brief members of Congress on the role of primary care in health reform. My work has been published in leading journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Health Affairs, and Annals of Family Medicine.Earlier in my career, I led the federal evaluation of efforts to rebuild and transform primary care services in Greater New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina — experience that deepened my commitment to understanding how policy decisions shape care delivery on the ground.I am also a family physician and practiced for 10 years in a community-based faculty practice at UCSF. That clinical experience continues to inform my perspective on workforce, access, and delivery system change.
