About Diana Gergel
I am an AI/ML scientist, atmospheric scientist and data scientist with 8+ years of experience. I did my PhD in computational hydrology with a focus on regional climate modeling in the Arctic, and after completion of my PhD entered the private sector, where I have held a variety of positions doing AI/ML research, applied climate science, data science and econometrics. I currently lead an AI Weather team that is part of the RWE AI Research Lab in Bellevue, where we specialize in designing, building and validating probabilistic weather forecasts for traders and other users across RWE. After finishing my PhD, I joined Rhodium Group and the Climate Impact Lab (CIL) as a climate scientist, where I led a large, multiyear collaborative project on downscaling surface variables from CMIP6 models for climate impacts research. I also worked closely with CIL economists and scientists on estimating the sector-by-sector social cost of carbon as well as with climate impacts teammates on developing asset class specific climate risk models. I subsequently joined what was then called the Aladdin Sustainability Lab at BlackRock after BlackRock acquired Rhodium\'s climate physical risk models. At BlackRock I worked on a variety of projects, including building BLK\'s first wildfire model, taking Rhodium\'s climate risk models to production in Aladdin Climate, and completing the downscaling project. Completion of the downscaling project involved leading the public release of the dataset as well as publishing a first author paper in the EGU journal Geoscientific Model Development (Gergel et al. 2024, 10.5194/gmd-17•••••24) on our bias-correction and downscaling methods for modeling tail risk. After BlackRock, I did a brief stint at Gro Intelligence (before the startup closed up shop completely) and then joined RWE in May of 2024. I am passionate about AI and ML research for weather and climate, probabilistic weather forecasting, and designing, building and implementing novel, cutting edge models. I love working in the weather and climate space, super challenging problems and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in modeling for weather and climate. Ultimately, I want impact - impact in science, impact in making the world more sustainable and healthier, and impact in combating climate change.
