ABOUT DHAVAL BARBHAYA
Over the course of my more than 20-year career in planning and urban design, I’ve always focused on context-specific placemaking that facilitates vibrant, healthy and livable cities. Whether I’m working on large-scale regional planning, an urban district, or block-level spatial design involving layering of buildings, mobility, infrastructure, open spaces and natural systems — creating resilient communities with vibrant character has always been an overarching objective. By education, I’m trained as an architect, urban design and planner, and I believe this blend of skill sets has allowed me to bridge the gaps between disciplines and synthesize aspects of placemaking at varying scales. However, I attribute my broader inclination for design, craft of placemaking, and a keen eye for detail to my family’s history as jewelry makers. Growing up in India in a family of goldsmiths, I watched my father and extended family work meticulously to craft exquisite pieces of jewelry and artifacts from silver and gold. I feel this passion for craftsmanship was ingrained in my genes and inspires my planning and urban design work today. My professional journey has allowed me to travel and work on projects around the world, which has been a blessing, and after living in India, Singapore and St. Louis, I now call Orange County home and enjoy all the wonderful qualities of Southern California with my family.
