ABOUT JOHN MCNAMARA

I help financial advisors & institutions understand the cutting edge of empirical financial science and guide them to deliver an outstanding investor experience on behalf of their clients. At Avantis Investors we implement an efficient, cost-conscious and repeatable process that leans into this cutting edge. Outperforming the market CAN happen without the traditional approach to active management. Rigorous academic research continues to improve upon our understanding of what drives market prices. I believe market prices to be fair and reflect the aggregate valuation expectations of investors globally. As such, basic valuation theory - which shows the expected return of a stock is a function of its current price, its book equity and expected future profits - can be used as a framework to identify differences in expected returns. Using current market prices and company financials to identify these differences and, with the intent to overweight securities with higher expected returns, can lead to better outcomes for clients. This is an investment philosophy that has been an influence on me since my days at Boston College studying basic finance 20 years ago and engrained in me as part of the Chartered Financial Analyst curriculum - CFA Charter awarded 2011. A few pit stops in the traditional active management world ultimately led me to join DFA where I was able to work with advisors for over a decade and now, most recently, joining many former colleagues and mentors at Avantis Investors. I’m grateful for the opportunity everyday to change the way investment professionals can think about investing. It’s my belief, systematic factor investing is largely misunderstood or unknown - even to the pros. I’m here to help and here to advocate for the outstanding wealth management experience you strive for. Finally, it is an honor to represent an organization which allocates 40% of our profits annually to fund life saving medical research through the Stowers Institute for Medical Research.
