Valley Photonic Crystals for 6G CommunicationGuides: Prof. Anshuman Kumar | Laboratory of Optical Quantum Materials (LOQM), IIT BombayProf. Abhishek Kumar | Ultrafast Terahertz Spectroscopy and Photonics (UTSP) Lab, JNCASR • Investigated the manifestation of valley-contrasting physics and topologically protected valley-kink (edge) states in honeycomb lattice photonic crystals by breaking inversion symmetry to engineer massive Dirac cones and a valley-contrasting Berry Curvature • Explored applications in topological waveguides, power splitters, directional couplers, delay lines, and other defect-tolerant components, highlighting their potential for on-chip THz (6G) communication systems • Derived and implemented the Plane Wave Expansion (PWE) method from first principles, developing a fully in-house computational framework in Python for precise photonic band structure and valley chern number computation of Photonic Crystals, optimized for scalability, versatility, and speed • Conducted rigorous numerical convergence testing for photonic band structure and topological invariant calculations, ensuring reliable results for diverse VPC geometries • Applied Bayesian optimization techniques to maximize a figure of merit for unexplored and unconventional VPC geometries, achieving configurations with enhanced spectral efficiency and robustness • Demonstrating the effect of fabrication imperfections (including line-edge roughness, angular deviations, and positional errors) in VPC geometries on its topological characteristics
