Derrick G. Wilkerson RSS, CAC. Recovery Support Specialist provides therapeutic substance abuse education and support to individuals who enter the emergency room Psych Ed department who think they may have mental illness, alcohol, opioid or chemical dependency problems. He motivates and educates the patient and family member on recovery strategies to help combat thoughts and cravings of wanting to use drugs, alcohol, or opioids which is common to individuals that have become addicted and the importance of developing tailored relapse prevention plans with practical solutions and problem solving. He also provides additional information and resources for patients that are disabled, and experiencing homelessness, depression, anxiety, and lack of social support. These resources are available for the patient during one on one encounter and after they discharge from the hospital if they choose. As a recovery support specialist he will also make available resources that support the spouse/ partner or family member of the patient that believe they have been affected by their loved ones mental illness/ drug or alcohol addictions. This therapeutic holistic approach bridges the gap between family member and patient, and bringing with it hope, healing, and wholeness. Additional resources for specific clinical or recovery support groups, sober living, including outpatient, inpatient treatment, or out of State inpatient treatment is also available for patient upon request or before discharge.
