ABOUT DERIK CHICA
I am an action-oriented and results-seeking Latinx male with a dedication to accountability, transparency, sustainability, and social justice. I am a passionate science and mathematics educator, consistently attempting to learn from my students and individuals around me. I pursue social justice and human rights for all through an anti-racist and anti-colonial mentality, hoping to gain greater unity between the diverse identities and ideologies in what is known as Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Turtle Island. As a scientist, I am consistently seeking solutions with a critical lens and maintain an open mind to different perspectives, understanding our views are influenced by our environmental and contextual circumstances. I hope to dedicate my life to supporting individuals and groups most marginalized by the current systems by diversifying my political engagement from grassroots organizing to system-level policy and implementation strategies, all while maintaining a ground-level link through daily secondary teaching. Recently, in the past decade, I have been exploring my Indigenous ancestry and my own Indigeneity from the south.
