View department →

Arlington, VA, US

Supporting the Two Six Electronic Systems (TSE) business unit, initially focusing on secure 5G wireless technologies. Integrated SDRs like BladeRF and USRP N310 into remote testing environments, configured Open5GS modems and SIMs, and developed Python-based automation tools to accelerate testing workflows. Built a custom C++ client using HTTP JSON-RPC to interface with remote access servers, enabling low-level messaging, symbol resolution, and secure file transfer across network line cards. Improved CI/CD infrastructure using GitLab and Docker, and led efforts to modify gNB configurations for network signaling analysis.Later transitioned to an embedded systems program, where I led full-stack development of a Linux kernel driver, userspace interface, and Go service to control FPGA-based video detectors on a Xilinx Zynq platform using AXI and DMA.Managed and mentored direct reports through 1:1s, goal-setting, and performance reviews.

ABOUT DEREK MCCUBBIN

As an experienced Embedded Software Engineer with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Masters of Systems Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, I have a proven track record of working in the wireless industry. Skilled in C/C++/C#, RTOS, and BLE. I possess expertise in GIT/SVN/IBM version control, code review and debugging, unit and integration testing, QNX and Nucleus OS, Linux (Ubuntu), and Agile/Scrum Software Development Lifecycle.Throughout my career, I have taken ownership of delivering high-quality firmware and easily understandable documentation while meeting deadlines. I have worked on multiple internal C# tools and led software engineering efforts for several projects, including the RO-X Software Update Tool, GS-ESBD Operations Tool, and Factory Shipping Tool, with a strong focus on streamlining processes and improving efficiency. My experience in developing drivers, protocols, and tools for embedded systems using Nordic NRF52 BLE module, NXP/Freescale ARM-based Kinetis K24, and UART and I2C/TWIM drivers, among others, have enabled me to develop temperature sensor drivers and configurable IO BLE services and drivers, among others. With a strong customer obsession in mind, I have conducted QA testing on both low-level software features and full system integration tests, while respectfully challenging ideas and voicing concerns. I have also presented data collected from tests and the functionality of solutions I\'ve developed.Overall, I bring strong technical skills, a results-oriented approach, and a commitment to excellence to any technical engineering role.
