About Derek Thornton
I utilize my skills in financial analysis and working hard with other people to help companies be successful. I also enjoy spending time with family, being active in the community, and competing in running or cycling races when possible.Per the Leadership Trifecta and CoPilot my.Personal Mission Statement:\"I lead with clarity, integrity, and purpose—translating complexity into actionable insight, empowering others through transparent communication, and continuously growing in service of a stronger, more ethical organization. I strive to balance performance with people, and progress with principle, while honoring the systems and freedoms that make meaningful work possible.\"Leadership Philosophy :\"As a leader, I believe in the power of clear communication, ethical decision-making, and continuous learning. I\'m hands off aiming to create environments where people feel informed, valued, and challenged to grow. I lead by example—balancing strategic thinking with operational execution, and financial stewardship with human-centered leadership. I view leadership not as control, but as service: to my team, my organization, and the broader mission we share.\"#probablymostlyaccurate
Experience
EVP, Chief Financial Officer
Feb 2020 — Present
I am responsible for the accounting and finance departments of a great locally owned community bank. I work as part of a fantastic executive team to grow the bank in a financially responsible manner. With a great team around me, I am responsible for capital growth, earnings, interest rate risk, and liquidity management. I participate in managing loan and deposit rates, expense control, salary management, and overall profitability of the company. I oversee the annual budgeting process, annual audited financial statement issuance, as well as lead publishing the monthly and quarterly financial statements and accompanying review/analysis. I lead the bank\'s Asset Liability Committee and rate subcommittees and I manage the bank\'s investment portfolio. I helped implement multiple pricing, FTP, profitability, and expense allocations models in my time at the bank and continue to work to refine these models for accuracy and effectiveness in decision making. During my tenure I also started and helped establish a data analytics department which is now a part of our IT department.
