About Derek A. Wheeler
I am a Doctoral Student in Clinical Psychology at Liberty University, pursuing licensure as a Clinical Psychologist with a strong focus on community mental health, sports and performance psychology, and the integration of faith and spirituality into clinical practice. As a second-year practicum student, I am committed to gaining diverse experience across the lifespan and helping individuals not just heal, but thrive. My background in military service, collegiate athletics, and overcoming childhood cancer has shaped my deep empathy and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.Before beginning my graduate studies, I earned a Bachelor\'s degree in Psychology with a concentration in Military Resilience from Liberty University. During that time, I collaborated with mental health professionals across multiple military bases to raise awareness about mental health and provide meaningful support to service members. Simultaneously, I served as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the United States Air Force, leading a 7-member Commander Support Team. In this role, I oversaw critical programs, managed projects and budgets, and ensured quality control in administrative processes such as evaluations, awards, and personnel requests.These experiences have strengthened my communication, leadership, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Guided by my faith and a deep desire to serve others, I’m committed to continual growth, collaboration, and making a lasting difference. I view psychology as a powerful means of promoting understanding, fostering resilience, and helping individuals live more integrated and meaningful lives.
