ABOUT DEREK J. KING
I am a Partner with the firm of Brownlee LLP, our Calgary Municipal Team Leader, and a Practice Group Leader for a number of the Firm\'s Municipal Practice Groups, including the Municipal Litigation and Enforcement, Environmental Law, Expropriation and Emergency Management Groups. My major areas of practice include Municipal, Environmental, Emergency Services and Emergency Management, Enforcement (including Planning and Development, Unsightly/Dangerous Properties, Safety Codes, General bylaw contraventions) and Expropriation Law. In the field of Environmental and Water Law, I have significant experience defending environmental prosecutions, representing clients before the Environmental Appeals Board, advising organizations and operational staff during investigations and inspections, environmental risk management in purchases of businesses and real property, and proactive environmental management and planning. I am a sessional lecturer in Planning Law for the University of Alberta, Faculty of Extension, the Past-President of the Alberta Expropriation Association, a member of the Municipal and Environmental Law Sections of the Alberta Bar Association. I am frequently invited to speak, as a subject matter expert in various areas of law for a broad range of municipal organizations and related seminar providers.In addition I am proud to have served as a Maritime Warfare Officer with the Royal Canadian Navy, Naval Reserve, from 1994 to 2006.
