Luciole Pharmaceuticals is a start-up biotech company focusing in repairing oxidative damage to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Oxidation of mtDNA results in fragility, breakdown and release of fragments into the cytosol and extracellular matrix. These fragments trigger multiple inflammatory pathways and apoptosis. The brain is particularly susceptible to oxidative mtDNA damage due to its high metabolic activity.
