CLINICAL CARE: Developed and managed treatment and recovery services. My colleagues and I were one of the first in the U.S. to offer integrated treatment programs for patients with co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders (CODs). RESEARCH: I was the Principal Investigator of the Appalachian Tri-State (ATS) Node of the National Institute on Drug Abuse\'s Clinical Trials Network (CTN). Our Node collaborated with providers in Western PA, West Virginia and Eastern Ohio, NIDA and 16 other Nodes in the U.S. The mission of the CTN is to improve clinical care using science as the vehicle. We conducted multi-site clinical trials in diverse populations in addiction and medical settings, and disseminated information to providers in publications, local, regional and national conferences.TEACHING: I conducted 500+ presentations in the U.S, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Taiwan, Guam and Viet Nam treatment of substance use and CODs. I taught night classes for 10 years at Penn State University and 10 years at Indiana University of Penna.DISSEMINATION: I have a passion for creating and disseminating information on recovery from substance use, psychiatric or CODs to individuals and their families. I was the first in the U.S. to create interactive recovery workbooks for individuals with co-occurring disorders and one of the first to create these materials for substance use disorders. I published numerous books, chapters and papers for professionals. My colleagues and I were one of the first to write about integrated treatment for CODs (see ADMINISTRATION Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Care project: I helped plan and implement conferences, workshops & programs for VA professionals. I conducted program reviews and provided consultation to numerous VA programs. As a military veteran, I was pleased to be part of a project aimed at helping vets.JOURNAL REFEREE: For 10 Journals (Addiction; Social Work; others).
