Along with my co-researcher Dr. Maria Hunt, former dean of Avila University, published our findings/discovery in the International Journal of Innovation Education and Research. Our research project began in 2010 and culminated in 2017. We studied the ideation process of adult, successful, consistently innovative, high achievers. We discovered three cognitive strategies shared by these thought leaders. Our subjects included: The founder of H&R Block, the NASA scientist who invented the Apollo 13 rotating heat shield, CEOs of private and publicly held companies who generated over $50B of asset growth, scientists with multiple patents, writers, composers and artists with multiple economic successes, a Heisman Trophy winner/attorney/executive, an Olympic athlete, architects, engineers, a Syclo/SAP software creator, a Guggenheim Fellow, AIGA Fellow, university and bank presidents, and many others. Their average ideation output was 1,200% higher than our control group. We reviewed biographies of other high achievers and found evidence of correspondence with our findings among over 100 out of the 30 year collection of case studies. Those subjects include: Hammurabi, Archimedes, Aristotle, St Ignatius, Descartes, Twain, Sears, Tesla, Edison, Margaret Mead, Hemmingway, Stephen King, Seinfeld, Tina Fey, Sarah Blakely and many others. During my presentations to groups who embrace the \"Innovate or Die\" mentality, I have found that they remember the three cognitive strategies vividly when I set them in the context of wrestling alligators, winter wilderness survival on Outward Bound, deep sea fishing, a float trip down the Congo River and other adventure stories.
