ABOUT DEMI TOMASIDES

Throughout my writing, disability advocacy, and community engagement, I am indebted to my ever-consistent, ever-prolific partner: the public library. • It was the Austin Public Library where I submitted my first testimonials to the Texas legislature, using narrative to inform policy. • It was the Georgetown Public Library where I wrote my senior capstone, Killing the Mockingbird: Denying Disability and Capitalizing on Harper Lee, which I was invited to present at three national conferences. • And it was the Dallas Public Library where I began my passion for social justice, creating a theatre therapy program for economically disadvantaged children with disabilities. While the library will always be my soulmate, it is my work with the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) that streamlined these passions into professional skills. Most recently, I have: • Collaborated with executive leadership to develop a grassroots team of advocates. • Researched health accessibility to create statewide programming. • Wrote in-house reports, created plain-language materials for distribution, and presented our work at statewide conferences. My peers tell me I am an effective leader because I am proactive, motivated by my relationships, and foster an environment of creative collaboration. I am energized by the people I work with and look forward to making positive change throughout my career! If you’re interested in connecting (or also just love libraries), shoot me a note. I would love to talk!
