About Delean Tolbert Smith
DeLean Tolbert is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at the University of Michigan – Dearborn. Her scholarly interests include undergraduate student learning, engineering knowledge transfer, Black pre-college and college student experiences, engineering in socio-cultural experiences, and design. Her dissertation investigated how Black adolescents and men developed engineering attributes and acquired various forms of capital from socio-cultural experiences. In her current research agenda, she anticipates exploring the how Black youth and college students leverage engineering knowledge, skills, and capital when completing engineering design tasks. Additionally, she anticipates exploring the impact of cultural awareness on engineering team dynamics.
