Trained and assisted by Professor Sarah Gerard and two PhD students, my independent research project, funded through ICRU\'s Research Fellows Program, aims to develop code and implement AI and machine learning techniques to automate the analysis of kidney structure in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The research will begin with traditional image processing methods and progress to deep learning approaches, including convolutional neural networks, to segment key structures and extract disease-related biomarkers. The project also involves working with high-performance computing resources and exploring self-supervised learning to improve performance with limited data. This experience is helping me build valuable skills in medical imaging, AI applications, and biomedical engineering and further preparing me for future opportunities in research and a career at the intersection of healthcare and technology. Here is a link to my research page: https://gerard.lab.uiowa.edu/people/delaney-sondgeroth
