About Dan Hutcherson

I\'ve been thinking about how people interact with AI since before it was called that. At argodesign I helped design Cortex Studio, one of the earliest graphical interfaces for AI, which meant wrestling early with questions the whole industry is only now catching up to: How do you make machine behavior legible? How do you give someone meaningful control over a system they can\'t fully see?That thinking has played out at Facebook and Messenger scale for the past two of my six years at Meta. In 2024, I led the Feed Deep Dives and Answer Sheet experiences. Feed Deep Dives became the largest single contributor to Meta AI\'s daily usage in the US, and Answer Sheet doubled Meta AI daily engagement and made Facebook the most-used Meta AI surface in the country. Now I lead AI experiences for family and friends chats on Messenger, figuring out how AI should show up in the most personal, high-trust conversations people have.What keeps me in this work is the making. I like being close to the problem, iterating fast, and seeing what happens when a design meets real people. AI just happens to be where the most interesting unsolved problems are right now.

Defining how Meta AI shows up across threads: deterministic entry points, AI-generated summaries, and dynamic themes. Shipped 8 features across Messenger, Feed, and Marketplace 17 experiments shaping 2026 roadmaps Messenger design lead (4 cross-org sprints; 7 org-wide visions)Meta AI on Feed (2024): Led the highest-impact Meta AI entry points on Facebook. Advocated for a model that prioritized comprehension over engagement, navigating stakeholder resistance to land an approach no other app across Meta\'s Family of Apps adopted. Feed Deep Dives: largest single contributor to Meta AI daily usage in the US Answer Sheet: doubled Meta AI daily engagement, most-used surface in the US Meta AI in comments: launched in 20 countries, exceeded all goalsCommunity Messaging, Admin Experiences (2022–2023): Sole designer and SME for admin experiences across Facebook and Messenger. Designed Chat Hub from scratch with no brief. Operated as a PM-hybrid during multiple PM transitions. Exceeded weekly active user goals by 6x 26% increase in admin engagement via workflow redesign 6x chat-host feature adoption Onboarding redesign exceeded growth target by 136%Groups, Communities & Admin Systems (2020–2022): Designed foundational admin experiences for Facebook\'s Communities platform as Pages, Profiles, and Groups merged into a single entity. Delivered Roles & Permissions, migration flows, and onboarding that hit all ship milestones.
