About Deepa Singh
She is a doctoral researcher in Artificial Intelligence Ethics at the Department of Philosophy, University of Delhi, where she is currently working on the ‘Principled Approach to AI Ethics’ and taking it towards actionability. As one of the first researchers at the University of Delhi and in India working in the field as it takes root, she has worked extensively in various projects which have involved collaborations with researchers and institutions in countries like - Germany, Australia, Austria, Netherlands, Ghana, U.S, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Israel etc. As an applied ethics researcher, her research straddles multiple disciplines such as: Human Computer Interaction, Machine Learning, Social Robotics, Tech Policy and Ethics and Science and Technology Studies. She also engages with various AI Ethics and AI/ML communities from across the world and appears in panels, talks, workshops, roundtables, and conferences frequently. For her contributions to the field, she has been honoured as one of the “100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics” in 2021. Previously, she has been a policy researcher and social entrepreneur, and has a rich experience of working at the nexus of policy, public good, democracy and environment. As a humanist in AI, it is her mission to see AI Ethics become actionable and widely implemented, and one of her current projects as a Member of the ‘Private Sector Group’ at CAIR (Collaborative AI Responsibility) Lab, Pittsburgh University, is focused on just that. As part of this group, she is currently working on developing responsible AI systems guidelines aimed at empowering private sector organisations to develop and deploy AI in socially responsible ways. She is also working on developing ways to measure responsibility of AI governance in tech companies, and developing insights and creating resources which can be used by investors and companies to develop AI in a socially responsible way.
