ABOUT DEBRA NEVELS

I believe that is it my responsibility to assist, advise and educate others. I believe that every member of a community has the responsibility to promote positive development. This is attained through active open communication that ‘touches’ the lives of the others during their college journey and beyond. There are several critical elements to the development of quality community engagement at this level:• Creation of a deliberate community of learningBeing part of a learning community involves the development of relationships with community members to develop and create opportunities that will provide everyone with an environment that promotes inquiry – questioning that which is and developing individual viewpoints of what can be. In this learning environment, it is equally important to hold community members accountable for their decisions. • Encourage communities of mutual care and shared responsibility where each person’s well being and dignity is respected and supported.Our world offers an exciting opportunity for individual development through the expansion of perspective to include a worldview while inspiring civic responsibility and a sense of pride in one’s own heritage. I believe that by working with community members in a better understanding of their own cultural contributions not only locally but also around the world, members have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the value of diversity and the importance of recognizing social injustice. Through this level of discussion, the we all learn to creatively challenge and be the impetus of change.
