ABOUT DEBORAH LAWUNMI
I am a qualified solicitor with expertise in the fields of employment law, commercial litigation and commercial contracts. I also have experience of advising on global labour law and HR matters. Having worked as a legal adviser for a leading global NGO and across Whitehall as a government lawyer, I know that meeting legal compliance requirements in respect of people management and commercial contracts poses significant risks and challenges for organisations. This is why I am committed to using my legal expertise to help clients get to the heart of legal problems in a cost effective way whilst offering workable solutions that meet their business needs. In the early part of my career I worked with a number of leading government departments resolving contentious disputes in employment, public and planning law. In order to gain new skills I spent some time abroad working in Brussels at the European commission, focusing on internal employment disputes and staffing matters. After returning to the UK I had a stint working as a legal advisor for the UK’s consumer protection regulator. In 2011, I moved to a role in central government as a commercial disputes lawyer, dealing mostly with high value commercial contract litigation. I then moved on promotion to lead a team of lawyers and paralegals within a large employment law department, where I worked closely with senior managers and HR directors on a range of high profile employment law disputes and HR management matters.Always eager to embrace new challenges - in 2019 I went to work in house as a commercial lawyer in the NGO sector where I provided legal support for Save the Children’s global international programmes and projects, advising primarily on employment law, commercial contracts and trademark protection issues.I am now working freelance as a legal consultant whilst completing PhD research into diversity within the legal profession at Queen Mary University of London.As well as being keen to work with organisations that want to strengthen resilience around legal risk, I am very interested in collaborations relating to diversity and equality in recruitment and within the workplace.
