ABOUT DEBORAH KRUGER

ARTIST STATEMENT: My work focuses on the tragic losses of the 21st century specifically the impact of human-induced climate change and habitat fragmentation on bird populations and survival of indigenous languages.My feathered textile paintings, sculptures and installations use recycled plastic or ceramics silk-screened with images from my drawings of endangered birds and text in endangered indigenous languages. Plastic feathers embed a narrative addressing global consumerism which is driving loss of both bird and human habitat. I use my training in textile design in service of ecological and cultural concerns. My US base is in Durham, NC and I also have a team-based production studio located in Chapala, Mexico. I am interested in finding gallery representation or art advisors that would bring my artwork to discriminating and enthusiastic international buyers.Specialties: Murals, sculpture, installations, wall reliefs, and prints. ARTIST BIO: Patterning, decoration and fiber have influenced Deborah Kruger’s work since her training in textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She has taught, lectured and exhibited her artwork in museums and galleries throughout the US, Europe and Mexico since the 1980s. Recent career highlights include a 2021 solo exhibition titled Plumas at PRPG.mx gallery in Mexico City. A larger solo show titled Turbulence: Birds, Beauty, Language & Loss will travel to the Visions Art Museum, San Diego, CA in 2023. In 2021 Kruger’s work appeared in two international Biennales: Abandon is in the Rufino Tamayo Bienal that is traveling throughout Mexico. Kimono was included in the Art Textile Biennial in Australia. Kruger has attended residencies at the Millay Colony for the Arts, Austerlitz, NY, La Porte Peinte Centre, Noyers-sur-Serein, France and a recent residency at Hypatia-in-the-Woods, Shelton, WA. The artist maintains team-based studios in the lakeside village of Chapala, Mexico, and in the vibrant art community of Durham, North Carolina, USA.
