About Deborah Sesok-Pizzini

Dr. Deborah Sesok-Pizzini is the Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President at Labcorp Diagnostics and Global Head of Quality. After graduating from Penn State College of Medicine, she attended the University of Pennsylvania for residency and fellowship and is board certified in clinical pathology and blood bank and transfusion medicine. Dr. Sesok-Pizzini later received her MBA from Villanova University with a concentration in finance and was recognized for high scholastic achievement in the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. She was the first Patient Safety Officer at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and went on to lead performance improvement, patient safety and advocacy work at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where she edited the first Patient Safety Book in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Laboratories published by CAP Press. She served for years on the Board of Directors at The American Red Cross-Penn Jersey Region and was the Chair of the Regional Medical Advisory Committee since 2008. Dr. Sesok-Pizzini also was a member on the inaugural ARC-Penn Jersey Diversity Advisory Committee, which led efforts in donor recruitment to ensure a diverse blood supply to provide better transfusion therapy for all patients including those with Sickle Cell Anemia. After serving as Department Patient Safety Officer, Vice-Chief for the Department, and Chief of Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine for the last 16 years at CHOP, Dr. Sesok-Pizzini embarked on a new career in Jan 2021 at Labcorp, which is a global life science company and diagnostic testing leader. She continues to teach and mentor as an Adjunct Professor, in Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine and Co-Leads the Leadership Curriculum for the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Residents and Fellows. She is active in committee work including Past Chair of the AABB Cellular Therapies Section Coordinating Committee, CAP Publications Committee and Editorial Board of CAP Today, where she is the contributing editor for Clinical Pathology Selected Abstracts. Dr. Sesok-Pizzini is also the Chair Elect for the ASCP Pathologist Council and the Chair Elect for the Intersociety Council for Pathology Information representing ASCP. She has authored several articles and chapters and edited books in transfusion medicine and patient safety. She is passionate about mentoring, teaching, and encouraging others to see pathology as an exciting, rewarding career in medicine with tangible benefits to patient care.
