About Deborah Schnur

I love a good challenge, and I’m not afraid to go beyond my comfort zone. In fact, I thrive by jumping into the abyss! Now I wake up every day excited to do what I love—growing herbs and vegetables and supporting school and community gardens. During my long career as an engineer in corporate America, I enjoyed the intellectual challenge but always felt something was missing—the human factor. I started college with altruistic intentions by majoring in biomedical engineering but eventually transitioned to mechanical engineering to increase my “employability”. Somehow over the years, I lost my sense of purpose.I decided to leave engineering altogether and start anew in public health. After completing a Master of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, I moved to southern California to become a FoodCorps service member at an under-resourced elementary school. Teaching students about healthy food and gardening fed my soul more than all those years toiling on technology ever could! That pivotal experience led me to become a San Bernardino County Master Gardener.Given my diverse background, I bring a unique combination of skills to community health, gardening, and everything else I do. My engineering side is organized, detail-oriented, and innovative, and navigates Zoom meetings, spreadsheets, and Google apps with ease. My public health side is compassionate, culturally competent, and service-minded, and advocates for health equity, food justice, and sustainability. Both sides come together to manage projects and people with maximum productivity and sensitivity. If you have a community project that’s been languishing for months or even years, I can bring it back to life and get it done. Having trouble “herding cats” on your project team? I’ll apply my extensive experience leading international, multidisciplinary teams to bring people together to achieve a common goal. Not sure how to get your message across? Let me help you clearly and concisely communicate complex concepts and solutions in easy-to understand terms.Feel free to reach out to me to discuss topics of mutual interest including community health, gardening, composting, urban agriculture, sustainability, and food justice. Message me on LinkedIn and by email at d••••••••@gmail.com. I look forward to connecting!Expertise: Community health and garden education, program and project management, quantitative and qualitative research, statistical analysis, strategic planning, team leadership

I interviewed COVID-19 cases and contacts to check for symptoms, provide isolation and quarantine instructions, and make referrals for testing and resources as needed.• I also educated businesses about COVID-19 control measures to protect the health and safety of their employees and customers.• To help my team easily access information, I created a COVID-19 resource library and a spreadsheet summary of state and county case data.• For several weeks, I worked at vaccination clinics, screening individuals for vaccine eligibility.
