ABOUT DEBARUN DUTTA

Dr Debarun Dutta is a senior lecturer at the School of Optometry, Aston University, Birmingham UK. In this balanced academic role, he is responsible for both excellence in research and teaching at the Optometry School. Dr Dutta is also a council member of the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA). He is involved in didactic and pre-clinical face-to-face training for Optometry students in the area focused on contact lenses and optometric clinical practice. Dr Dutta is also involved in translational research in the area of contact lenses, dry eye, ocular infections and antimicrobial strategies, including supervision for higher degree research students. Following graduation with Bachelor of Optometry, Dr Dutta joined L V Prasad Eye Institute, India for a one-year clinical fellowship in 2007. Following this, he worked as an optometry clinician and contact lens consultant at the Bausch and Lomb Contact Lens Centre, L V Prasad Eye Institute, for two years. Dr Dutta completed PhD from Brien Holden Vision Institute, Sydney in 2014 and joined the School of Optometry and Vision Science, UNSW where worked in various capacities including as a postdoctoral research fellow, senior research fellow and associate lecturer. During this journey, his translational research included all the three areas of ophthalmic research: basic research (in vitro microbiology, biochemistry, and cell biology), animal model research (mouse, rat, rabbit and guinea pig; contact lens and keratitis models) and clinical research (principal investigator for clinical studies and trials). In 2010 Dr Dutta received University International Postgraduate Award (UIPA) from UNSW towards his PhD at the Brien Holden Vision Institute. In 2013 Dr Dutta received Ezell Fellowship from American Academy of Optometry, and in 2015 he received Brian Kirby prize for research excellence in Optometry. Dr Dutta has received infrastructure and research grants from industry, University and public funding agencies since 2015. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals and book chapters. Dr Debarun Dutta is also a visiting fellow of the School of Optometry and Vision Science, UNSW, and a consultant for his Ophthalmic Industry partners.
