ABOUT BART DE BAERE

As a lead geochemist at WSP, a leading global engineering and consulting firm, I bring 10+ years of consulting experience applying geochemical principles and methods to address mining industry challenges and opportunities. I have been involved in numerous mining projects both within Canada and internationally, spanning all life of mine project phases. I am comfortable with occasional remote fieldwork. As part of my role, I train less experienced staff and review deliverables. Finally, I try to foresee project needs ahead of time to avoid any unnecessary project delays (read: understanding site-specific geochemistry can take some time!). Aside from classical mining geochemistry, I co-lead a CDR in Mining Working Group with the objective of helping adopt and scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) via mineral carbonation in the mining sector. This effort involves internal and external partners, including non-profits, technology suppliers, and academic partners. My academic background lies in aqueous geochemistry. While at the University of British Columbia, I developed new laboratory-based instrumentation to measure mineral dissolution rates and investigated the fundamental rate-determining parameters. I have published my research findings in multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and presented them at numerous (inter)national conferences. Following my doctoral studies, I acquired a graduate certificate in science and technology commercialization from Simon Fraser University, where I learned how to translate scientific discoveries into viable science-based ventures.
