About Dean Stevens
I\'m committed to the challenge of building tools and platforms to make engineers more productive. I’ve followed this career thread from semiconductor EDA at Mentor Graphics and Foresight Systems M&S to business productivity tools at Now Software through to a focus on software development tools at Intersolv and QualityZen/GripQA.My current focus is on efficiently building mission critical protection systems that make electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical for users around the world. Our products truly make life better for our fellow human beings. How often do we get to say that while we\'re building great software?I developed, and taught SEL\'s #Python course for several years. Now, I\'m humbly attempting to become a proficient #Rust coder.Specialties: Software Engineering, Software Development Tools, Model Driven Design, Mobile App Development, Wireless Data, System Architecture, Wireless Systems, Software Defined Radio Waveforms, Device Software, Managing Technologists, Managing Distributed Teams, Effective Communication
Experience
Engineering Director Protection Systems Services
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL)
Dec 2016 — Present · Pullman, WA, US
As the leader of the Protection Systems Services department, I work with elite teams to deliver firmware, forensic analysis, test automation, test execution, and value-added hardware engineering. Our teams strive every day to make electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical. Our work improves quality of life around the world.I\'m charged with supporting the protective relay forensics and test automation teams. We make sure that the devices perform as designed and we get to root cause in the rare cases where they don\'t.Over my time at SEL, I\'ve been privileged to own configuration software, firmware and test development for high and medium voltage protective relay products.I developed & taught SEL\'s Python training class. I have helped hundreds of colleagues become proficient Python coders. Python has really taken hold throughout the company.
