ABOUT GENE ANDERSON

Gene Anderson is Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Business and a results-driven academic leader known for fostering collaboration, driving innovation, and advancing institutional excellence. He excels at delivering measurable impact through shared strategic priorities rooted in broad consensus and collective engagement.Gene’s leadership is grounded in active listening, thoughtful dialogue, and empowering others—cultivating a culture of innovation and collaboration. He prioritizes attracting and developing top faculty and staff, advancing high-impact education and research, and building the partnerships and organizational strength essential for long-term success.He is passionate about student and alumni success, meaningful scholarship, and the role of universities in strenghening communities and making a positive impact on the world. Colleagues describe him as a decisive yet empathetic leader who brings a strategic and resilient mindset to academic leadership.In collaboration with faculty and staff, Gene has launched more than three dozen new degree programs—most of them interdisciplinary and/or online or hybrid. He has led efforts to modernize curricula to be more experiential, digital, and global, while significantly enhancing student enrollment, placement outcomes, research productivity, fundraising, and institutional reputation. Under his leadership, the business schools at Miami and Syracuse reached historic highs in national rankings at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.Earlier in his career, Gene was the D. Maynard Phelps Professor of Business at the University of Michigan, where he also served as Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He later served as Dean at the University of Miami’s Herbert Business School (2011–2016) and the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University (2017–2022).Gene holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and MBA and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.A native of Pittsburgh, he attended high school at the American Community School in Knightsbridge, London. He and his wife, attorney Sheryl Manning, have raised one Ph.D. and one Ph.D. candidate.
