He began his career in Asheville, North Carolina as a Police Cadet. Before he was eligible to become a Police Officer, he served as a police dispatcher for one year. At the age of 21, he became a full time Asheville Police Officer. Chief Crisp attended night school while working full time and earned three advanced degrees, he has an Associate of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, and a Masters in Public Affairs from Western Carolina University. Quickly rising through the ranks of law enforcement, he was promoted to Captain at the age of 29, Major at 32, and Police Chief at 33. He accepted his first Chief appointment in Greer, South Carolina. He served from February 1991 to May 2004. He also served as the Chief of Police in Columbia, South Carolina from May 2004 to March 2008.
