WORK HISTORY
Resident Sound Designer @The Phoenix Theatre Company
Phoenix, AZ, US
Since late 1996, I have been instrumental in developing the sound department at Phoenix Theatre and have served as the Resident Sound Designer, primarily for musicals, since February 1998. In the early years, we worked with outdated and borrowed equipment, but through collaboration with skilled engineers and generous donors, we have transformed our facilities into a state-of-the-art marvel. Our team has dedicated countless hours to upgrading the infrastructure, perfecting mic techniques, installing conduits and speakers, and even modifying consoles to meet specific production needs. The theater and I are committed to producing high-quality productions that enhance storytelling without drawing attention to the technology. With over 130 productions designed and engineered at Phoenix Theatre, including notable shows like \"Les Miserables,\"\"Avenue Q,\" “The Color Purple”,\"In the Heights”, and “Americano!”, I have honed my skills in EQ, effects, imaging, and mix structure, and have mentored many excellent engineers that have moved on to lead and build amazing things across the world. As I approach 30 years of service in 2026, my goal is to continue contributing to this esteemed institution, refining the quality of our work and ensuring each show is a seamless and immersive experience for audiences.
SKILLS
ABOUT DAVID TEMBY
As a seasoned business operations professional, I\'ve navigated the complexities of scaling businesses and managing diverse functions, including accounting, acquisitions, compliance, engineering, HR, IT, legal, logistics, marketing, operations, sales, and trucking. My career journey has been marked by a passion for solving customers’ and colleagues’ problems through modern technology and optimizing business processes.Growing up, I was intensely curious, regularly taking things apart to understand how they worked, which laid the foundation for my problem-solving mindset. This curiosity continues to drive my desire to learn and adapt to new challenges, whether it’s figuring out how to navigate the intricacies of taxes, developing complex financial models, renovating the tech stack, or creating the infrastructure to support audio networking in large environments. I love learning about the challenges others are up against and providing assistance to those in need. This obsession with analysis and complex puzzles has often painted me as the person who enjoys doing the things that no one else wants to do. But if you want it done, and you want it done well, my colleagues know to put it on my plate.Outside of work, my family and I are travelers, enjoying exploration, nature, and immersing ourselves in other cultures. On any given weekend, you can find us kayaking, driving to some unknown random spot in the middle of some southwestern state just to see what\'s there, hiking, camping, hitting a museum, or doing projects around the house ourselves with help from YouTube. We\'ve often been accused of not knowing how to stop, and people couldn\'t be more correct about that.Feel free to reach out if you want to discuss financial modeling, creative Excel formulas, business strategies, your favorite reverb algorithm, how to EQ a lav quickly, or if you just have a challenging issue and need a sounding board. I will go out of my way to help you!
