ABOUT DEA BANKOVA

Find my portfolio at: https://deabankova.comI am a front-end developer specialising in data visualisation and interactive storytelling, blending technical expertise with a diverse background in mathematics, machine learning, and art. At Reuters, I was a lead front-end developer on the Reuters 2024 US Election graphics, creating real-time pages and advanced interactive map visualisations almost entirely from scratch. These graphics attracted millions of views within days and set new benchmarks for us for performance, accessibility, and maintainability on high-traffic election pages.Beyond election coverage, I’ve worked on multiple award-winning projects, such as \"Quantum computing decrypted\", where I devised a novel visual representation of quantum processes, informed by my academic background in mathematics, which earned high praise from a leading physicist for its clarity and innovation. Outside of work, I am deeply passionate about creative coding and constantly work on personal projects that push the boundaries of my abilities. For these, I have won awards such as \'Impressive Individual\' at the Information is Beautiful Awards. I also organise a thriving creative coding meetup in London, fostering a community that explores the intersection of technology and art.My technical stack includes JavaScript, TypeScript, Svelte, D3.js, Canvas, Three.js and more, and I have extensive experience in data gathering and analysis, design, and research. Prior to Reuters, I worked as a data scientist and machine learning engineer at Microsoft and a start-up later acquired by Shutterstock, applying analytical and programming skills to solve complex challenges.Having lived in three culturally distinct countries and worked across industry and academia, in addition to speaking multiple languages, I bring a global perspective and a flexible approach to everything I do. My aim is to create work that is technically robust, visually impactful, and deeply engaging—whether it’s informing millions or sparking creative delight.
