About David S. Shapiro

David S. Shapiro, MD, MHCM is a surgeon, trauma provider, and critical care physician with 20 years experience in hospital and community based trauma care and leadership. He is the Chair of the Connecticut ACS Committee and the Chair of the ACSCOT Stop The Bleed Program. Over his career, he has served as the Chief Medical Officer/Vice President of Medical Affairs, Chief Quality Officer, Chair of Surgery, and Division Chief of Surgical Critical Care and Surgical Emergencies at a large, urban, level I trauma center. He also created a high-reliability, leadership and patient safety program and curriculum picked, adopted by the local university medical school and his hospital system. He has served as the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Connecticut, and is an Associate Professor of Surgery at UCONN, where he worked as core surgical faculty and the Assistant Program Director, and at the Frank Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. Trained as a general surgeon, specializing in surgical critical care, trauma, and acute care surgery, he is Board Certified in General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care and Hospice & Palliative Care. Dr. Shapiro is a founding member of the Association of Out Surgeons and Allies, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering LGBT surgeons and trainees to pursue their careers. He has been awarded the Sisters of Joseph of Chambrey Award, the Hartford Yard Goats/Colorado Rockies ‘Triple Crown’ Award, and was the recipient of the ACS CT\'s 2025 \"Distinguished Service Award.\" After Boston College, he earned a medical degree & surgical residency at the University of Connecticut, then served a fellowship at the Oregon Health Science University. He then came to Connecticut, and became a Fellow of the National Patient Safety Foundation/American Hospital Association Leadership Program, earned a MHCM/MPH degree at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. He has served on Council for the SCCM, and his expertise and advocacy fall in injury prevention including violence, vehicular injury, and more, in addition to prevention of harm in the hospital. He is well published with more than 100 publications, abstracts, posters, and book chapters, and was an editor/contributor for After the ICU: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Supporting Critical Illness Survivors. He has been awarded research and program funding totaling over $1.7 M over his professional career, and participates in a variety of research topics. Dr. Shapiro is also a published photographer, a traveler, a restauranteur, and dog lover.
