ABOUT DAVID M. GUTIERREZ ESTEVEZ
A passionate technologist embracing multiculturalism at heart, I am a research-based standards technical leader and world-class telecommunications expert with both broad and deep expertise on mobile networks as well as AI/ML. Since October 2024, I am with the Wireless Technologies and Ecosystems organization at Apple attending 3GPP SA2 and SA plenary meetings, covering a variety of 6G and 5G-Advanced topics (e.g. AI/ML, Sensing, data framework) and working in close cross-functional collaboration with research and product teams. Currently, I also serve as 3GPP co-rapporteur of the Rel-20 item on Sensing and 6G penholder of Network for AI in SA2. Before joining Apple, I was Sr. Technology Manager at Samsung R&D Institute UK. I obtained my Engineering Degree in Telecommunications (Hons.) from the Universidad de Granada, Spain, and my M.S.(2011) and Ph.D.(2014) degrees on wireless networks from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA, USA. From September 2014 to September 2015, I worked for Huawei Technologies in Silicon Valley on the topic of cloud computing. Previously, I had been with several Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany and with Qualcomm in California working on 4G LTE physical layer and RAN for periods ranging from three to fifteen months.In 2016, I joined Samsung in the UK and led several large-scale research projects within the European ecosystem on 5G RAN, 5G architecture, and AI/ML in roles of technical manager and work package leader. In January 2019 I became a permanent member of Samsung\'s 3GPP SA2 delegation and held various global (Samsung-wide) and local (Samsung UK) technical leadership roles. Among others, I led Samsung’s global Rel-18 efforts on system support for AI/ML services (AIMLsys) in the role of SA2 co-rapporteur. In addition to AI/ML and analytics, other system architecture topics I covered while at Samsung are Ambient IoT, location services/positioning, and ranging.My published work accumulates 1800+ citations and I\'m (co-)inventor of 80+ patents and patent applications, many of them thoroughly adopted in the 3GPP specifications via approved standards contributions.
