Experience

  1. Director, Abfe, Advocacy & Public Policy

    American Booksellers Association

Jan 2018 — Present · White Plains, NY, US

I presently lead ABA\'s advocacy division, which now incorporates the American Booksellers for Free Expression (ABFE). The advocacy team works to address concerns pertaining to issues that affect ABA\'s independent bookstore members. When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, our advocacy team immediately acted on a number of different fronts. We were quickly in touch with leaders in both the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, as well as the House and Senate small business committees. We helped influence key components of the CARES Act, most especially the necessity that the loan act as a grant. Our team also created an advocacy resource page that summarizes COVID-19 legislation and other information crucial to our members. Our work ensured that association members, many of who are small retailers, were successful in receiving grants and loans. In addition to COVID-19 related issues, my current work focuses heavily on antitrust, financial issues, healthcare, health insurance, tax law, tech industry issues, and a number of regulatory and legislative issues related to small business. In addition our team: regularly conducts meetings with high-level legislators at federal and state levels, working to address policy issues impacting bookstore members; consistently monitors legislation surrounding key issues to member stores, analyzing potential impact and summarizing key aspects of legislation for a broad audience of association and Board members, associated organizations, media partners and lawmakers; works to develop coalitions with business and retail organizations; educates consumers and lawmakers on key issues to generate increased campaign support; and develops advocacy strategies for laws impacting e-commerce and storefront bookstores.
