My detailed profile tells you that I’m an Incorporated Electronics Engineer with an MBA and a Chartered Manager who has worked for several blue-chip companies. So this summary is about me as a person. Journey of discoveryAs an engineer I like to understand how things work. When I was young I would modifying early computers to see what would happen. Getting some of these modifications wrong started my interest as an Electronic Engineer which developed to what I would call functional (not elegant) programming to control the electronics then becoming an Incorporated Engineer. Latterly, becoming a senior manager, I wanted to understand how a business works, so I started a learning journey that resulted in an MBA and becoming a Chartered Manager. Personal valuesIt might be a bit of a cliché but I value honesty, integrity and trust, because they go to build loyalty. Having worked in several organisations where secrecy and confidentiality is key, I can understand when someone says that they are unable to tell me the reason why something is needed. That honesty accompanied with integrity engenders trust which I believe builds loyalty. Decision makingI have a consultative approach when faced with a dilemma, because I believe this is the best way to gather all the necessary facts to make informed decisions. Sometimes there isn’t time to gather all the facts to make a fully informed decision. In these circumstances my maxim is “It is better to make a decision and get it wrong than procrastinate”. Therefore, I like to work for a “learning” organisation where mistakes are allowed, but understand you never make the same mistake twice. LeadershipFinally, in my view leadership to me is about making things better, which sometimes having to demonstrate that you are personally suffering the pain of a journey to a better place!
