ABOUT DAVID STONE

Master Mariner and maritime management professional with more than 29 years of international experience across LNG shipping, offshore drilling, maritime training, academic instruction, and fleet assurance. My career combines operational command at sea with leadership in training, auditing, and safety culture development, supporting organizations in achieving high standards of performance, compliance, and operational excellence.Currently serving as Captain with Northern Marine Management, I command LNG carriers and FSRUs in complex global operations, leading multicultural crews while ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant vessel performance. Alongside my sailing role, I work as a Lead Instructor with Virtual Marine, delivering advanced simulator-based training focused on emergency response, lifeboat operations, and practical competency development. I also conduct MLC, ISM, ISPS, navigation, and technical audits as an Auditor with Cambridge Marine Limited, helping companies strengthen safety systems and operational effectiveness.Previously, I served as Captain and Training & Assurance Specialist with Nakilat Shipping and Trading Limited, where I coordinated fleet audit programs, developed a successful remote auditing system during global travel restrictions, and delivered onboard training across a large LNG fleet. My earlier roles with Thenamaris LNG and Shell Trading and Shipping Company included vessel command and a global Operational Excellence Specialist position, designing and delivering leadership and safety programs to more than officers worldwide, earning recognition for improving fleet safety performance. I also bring offshore experience as Master and Marine Stability Leader aboard a deep-water semi-submersible drilling unit.In parallel with my seagoing career, I spent over two decades as a Professor with the Marine Institute at Memorial University of Newfoundland, developing and delivering academic and professional courses in navigation, risk management, offshore operations, stability, and maritime safety.I hold a Master’s degree in Maritime Management, a Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Studies, and a Class 1 Master Mariner Certificate of Competency, supported by extensive industry certifications. I am passionate about leadership, training, and continuous improvement, and I thrive in roles that combine operational expertise with mentoring and organizational development.
