ABOUT DAVID SHERCLIFF
I work for ABG who is a market leader in the design, manufacture and technical support of high performance geosynthetic systems for use in a wide range of sustainable civils and building projects; including: Blue & Green Roofing, Landfill containment, ground stabilisation and reinforcement, Porous Paving and Structural Drainage applications.My passion is to find and share innovative green solutions to earthworks structures using Geosynthetics. I have worked in Geosynthetics from when it was considered as an innovation in the early 80s to the present day. We have made many advances.I have been privileged to be instrumental in finding solutions such as: Carrying out fundamental trackbed experiments on large full scale vibrating sleeper rig to prevent pumping into ballast layers Defining specifications for landfill membrane protection geotextiles world wide. Keeping our landfills safe. Introducing the use of robust single layer needle punched geotextiles to replace multiple layers of expensive filter stone in coastal and river defence schemes. Saving carbon on expensive mineral extraction and transport Defining the limiting velocities for grassed geosynthetic reinforced spillways. Green sustainable engineered grass reducing the need for environmentally damaging concrete“Floating” a motorway over contaminated silt using high strength woven geotextiles. Massive savings avoiding cart away or piling solutions. Writing specifications for asphalt reinforcement solutions based on 10 year experiments. Saving up to 50% on maintenance costs over a 25 year period Full scale testing leading to anti pumping solution for Network Rail Solving erosion problem in Bangladesh with a “no rock” training works solution to bank protection 35+years on committees to define best practice: BSi, CEN, ISO, CIRIA, Susdrain, RSTA. Sharing and regulating good testing and installation practice worldwide Communicating with the next generation, speaking at universities and learned societies: ICE, IWM, IGS, BTS
