The Switch was founded in 1991 in New York City to provide broadcasters, studios, post-production facilities and transmission service providers with the industry’s first customer controlled local video routing solution. After being embraced by the New York broadcast community, The Switch expanded its operations to Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Miami; eventually connecting these cities as well via its Inter-City On Demand “ICOD” network. The Switch’s ICOD network was designed to provide a “master quality” transport solution. While we recognize that most signals will be compressed prior to delivery to the end user, it is The Switch’s goal to provide the highest quality, lowest latency solution across our network prior to a signal being recorded, edited or compressed for distribution. To that end, The Switch provides three basic levels of video transport. 1) Uncompressed 270 Mbps SD-SDI (supports customer encoded ASI up to 210+ Mbps)2) HD (apx 240 Mbps with all encoding and decoding happening within The Switch’s core)3) Uncompressed 1.485 Gbps HD-SDI Based on a fully protected, 20 Gigabit meshed backbone, the ICOD network now connects 46 cities across the U.S, Canada and the Great Britain.
