ABOUT DAVID OVIES

David Ovies is currently a Manufacturing Engineer for Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) at Blue Origin in Cape Canaveral, FL.Formerly at Boeing, he was a Design Engineer for the Space Launch System (SLS) program as a TPS design lead. In this role, he was responsible for development of TPS in the forward section of SLS Block 1B Core Stage, as well as supporting design for other TPS blankets & foam insulation on the SLS Exploration Upper Stage (EUS). Responsibilities included developing & reviewing 3D models, 2D drawings, MBD Installations, and other documentation for release to an external supplier for build. Additionally, David also oversaw Production Definition Team (PDT) support on EUS, which involved leading 15-20 contractors through a variety of design development across vehicle structures, tanks, feed-lines, wire harnesses, and thermal blankets.Previously, David was a Modeling & Systems Engineer in the Design Visualization Group. In this role, he utilized CATIA to visualize SLS manufacturing environments with real-life scan data. He would work with design, manufacturing, and operations teams across the SLS program.David was also a Multi-Skill Rotational Engineer in Boeing’s Engineering Career Foundation Program (ECFP). This two-year development program gave him an opportunity to perform multiple job functions that span different products & lifecycle stages. He graduated from this program in July 2019. His previous rotations included Materials Engineering on CST-100 Starliner, Manufacturing Engineer on 787 Final Assembly, and Structures Designer for the 787 Midbody.David received his Bachelors in Aerospace Engineering at NC State University in 2017. At this phase, he excelled in his coursework by maintaining a 4.0 GPA and graduating as a valedictorian. He partook in diverse organizations both at his university and outside of school that extended his education, such as Remote-Piloted Aircraft Research, the University Honors Program, Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honors Society, and FIRST Robotics. David held two college summer internship positions. In 2016, David interned with Manufacturing Engineering at Boeing South Carolina 787 Final Assembly & Delivery. Prior to his Boeing Internship, David was an FAA Certification Intern at B/E Aerospace in 2015. He worked for the Seating & Aftermarket group, which focused on certifying aftermarket changes to commercial airline seats. Outside of work, David enjoys cooking, gardening, walking his two dogs, Ellie and Frankie, and braving the Central-Florida heat to enjoy some theme parks!
