   We are all special. I try to never forget that in my work with clients. Key elements of investing: 1. An allocation that\'s appropriate for one\'s emotional fortitude 2. Patience 3. Compounding 4. Re-balancing 5. Repeat Over my 40 years in investing, I’ve also come to appreciate that an investor’s \"emotional fortitude\" in the face of market volatility is a critical piece to a long-term strategy. Put another way, it\'s unfortunate that human emotion relentlessly undermines rational investing decisions. A well-thought-out investment plan is one that satisfies the investor’s financial needs and that is structured to help the investor withstand emotional temptations. Simply, that means the client must be comfortable with the allocation and investments even when markets are volatile and rough. I believe achieving that requires portfolios to be diversified and customized specifically to each client’s financial needs and investing disposition. While diversification (or asset allocation) does not ensure a profit and may not protect against loss, it can play a key role in establishing a sound investment strategy and reducing risk. We create investment plans that look beyond the basic consideration of risk tolerance. The portfolio needs to work for the client’s long-term benefit and withstand the short-term ups and downs. It also needs to be reviewed and thoughtfully adjusted along the way – with transparency. Patience and compounding can be powerful allies in investing success. We are all special.
